Abstract

A transfer roller includes a first roller and a second roller different from the first roller. Whichever of the first and second rollers is disposed to face an image carrying member is disposed selectively either at a reference position where it forms a transfer nip portion by being pressed against the image carrying member or at a separated position where it stays away from the image carrying member. According to the thickness or basis weight of a recording medium, either the first roller or the second roller is disposed to face the image carrying member.
