Abstract

A computer implemented method for monitoring a driver of a vehicle includes the following steps carried out by computer hardware components: determining, from image data captured by an image sensor located in a cabin of the vehicle, at least one viewing vector of the driver; determining a distraction area of at least one source of distraction inside the cabin of the vehicle and outside a field of view of the image sensor, wherein the distraction area is determined from data captured by a position detection unit of the vehicle; determining a driver distraction value based on an extent to which the at least one viewing vector intersects the at least one distraction area of the at least one source of distraction; and triggering a warning signal in response to determining that the driver distraction value is greater than a threshold.
