Abstract

A method for secure replacement of a device trust anchor for a device associated with a device manufacturer is proposed. The method comprises the steps ofa) providing the device with a trust anchor comprising a public key of a PKI key pair associated with the device manufacturer,b) generating a one-time key pair,c) preparing the device for replacing the public key of the PKI key pair with a new public key by an update secured via a private key of the one-time key pair,d) generating a new PKI key pair,e) providing an update to the device including the public key of the new PKI key pair and a signature from the private key of the one-time key pair,f) verifying the signature via the public key of the one-time key pair andg) installing the new public key of the new PKI key pair.In particular, the invention allows for secure transition from classical to post-quantum algorithms but is also useful for other scenarios with high security requirements.
