Abstract

A chain saw (10) comprises:a mount (12) supporting a sprocket (18) driveable to rotate around an rotation axis (84);a guide bar (22) having a longitudinal axis (70) extending through a distal end (86) of the guide bar (22) and the rotation axis of the sprocket (18), the guide bar (22) movable along the longitudinal axis (70) with respect to the mount (12), the guide bar (22) and the sprocket (18) lying in a common plane (80);a chain (20) trained around the sprocket (18) and the guide bar (22);a tensioning mechanism comprising a spring (52), a support (44) rigidly connected to the mount (12), a tensioning screw (42) and a tension bolt (48) which is rigidly connected to the guide bar (22), wherein the spring (52) biases the guide bar (22) away from the mount (12) along the longitudinal axis (70) with a force that is adjustable by the tensioning screw (42), wherein the tension screw (42) extends parallel to the longitudinal axis (70) of the guide bar (22);wherein the tensioning mechanism is, with respect to a direction (82) oriented in the common plane (80) transversely to the axis (70), aligned with the axis (70).
