Abstract
The proposed embodiments involve operating a network node within a mobile 3GPP communication network to enable redundant data transmission through separate user planes (UP1, UP2). Each user plane is terminated by a user plane function UPF1 and UPF2 and wirelessly connected to user equipment UE1 and UE2. These user plane functions can connect externally to one or more network paths of a redundant data network. The method includes providing subscription parameters for at least one user equipment to set up two protocol data unit sessions and assigning the user equipment to one of the user planes. The session management function (SMF) retrieves these subscription parameters to assign the user plane functions and set up the sessions. The session management function then checks if a base station (gNB1) involved in one session is also involved in another session. If the base station is engaged in multiple sessions, the session management function moves one PDU session to a target base station (TgNB). This ensures that redundant data transmission is maintained by having separate paths for each session.
