One embodiment of the present invention provides a system for provisioning physical resources shared by a plurality of jobs. During operation, the system establishes resource-usage models for the jobs, ranks the jobs based on quality of service (QoS) requirements associated with the jobs, and provisions the jobs for a predetermined time interval in such a way that any unused reservations associated with a first subset of jobs having higher QoS rankings are distributed to other remaining jobs with preference given to a second subset of jobs having a highest QoS ranking among the other remaining jobs. Provisioning the jobs involves making reservations for the jobs based on the resource-usage model and corresponding QoS requirements associated with the jobs. |

An additive manufacturing system has an aerosol generator to aerosolize a powder, a deposition surface, a surface charging element to apply a blanket charge to the deposition surface, a charging print head to selectively remove portions of the blanket charge from the deposition surface, and a transport system to transport the aerosol powder from the aerosol generator to the deposition surface, the transport system having an aerosol charging element to apply charge opposite of the blanket charge to the aerosol powder. An additive manufacturing process includes creating an aerosol from a powder at a spray generator, charging the aerosol to produce a charged aerosol having a first charge, forming a blanket charge on a deposition surface having a second charge of an opposite polarity from the first charge, selectively removing regions of the blanket charge, and transporting the charged aerosol to the charged regions to form structures on the charged regions from the charged aerosol. |

During operation, the system determines, by a content producing device, a root manifest, wherein a manifest indicates a set of content objects and their corresponding digests, wherein a respective content object is a data object or another manifest, and is associated with a name that is a hierarchically structured variable length identifier (HSVLI) which comprises contiguous name components ordered from a most general level to a most specific level. The system generates an index associated with the root manifest, wherein the index allows the set of content objects indicated in the root manifest to be searched and accessed directly, thereby facilitating a content consumer to seek to a desired location in the content represented by the root manifest. |

Spatially modulated light emanating from an object moving along a flow path is used to determine various object characteristics including object length along the flow direction. Light emanating from at least one object moving along in a flow path along a flow direction of a spatial filter is sensed. The intensity of the sensed light is time modulated according to features of the spatial filter. A time varying electrical signal is generated which includes a plurality of pulses in response to the sensed light. Pulse widths of at least some of the pulses are measured at a fraction of a local extremum of the pulses. The length of the object along the flow direction is determined based on the measured pulse widths. |
