A flight display (100) is described. The flight display includes a display screen (102), a physical network interface (106), and multiple processors (110). The flight display interfaces with the flight deck by way of the physical network interface. The display screen displays images representative of avionics data in response to signals generated by one or more of the processors. The processors also generate command signals causing an actuator (306) of the aircraft to control a flight control surface or a throttle. In this regard, the one or more of the processors perform various automatic flight control system (AFCS) functions. A system (200) is further described including multiple of the flight displays. By hosting the AFCS functions across processors of the multiple flight displays, a level of command integrity may be reached. Furthermore, backups flight displays are available to be reconfigured to perform the AFCS functions. |

A system (100) and method (500) for Automated Aerial Refueling (AAR) combining unrelated capabilities to provide a high integrity solution to boom manipulation and insertion to couple with a receiver receptacle. Precise positioning systems on each aircraft coupled via data link (140) provide a high integrity relative positioning solution generating a requisite integrity for positioning yet insufficient for boom insertion. High definition cameras (124) onboard the tanker provide multi-wavelength remote vision digital images used to identify the boom fitting (402) as well as the receptacle (254). Combined with boom position information from the tanker (110), the system determines pixel position inputs from stereo digital images to precisely identify the boom (130) and receptacle (254) and manipulate the boom to insert the boom fitting (402) into the receptacle (254). Constant camera generated feedback and updated relative positioning alerts the system and disconnects the boom should the receiver aircraft (150) stray outside the proper position. |

A system for time synchronization over redundant switch-based avionics networks is disclosed. The system includes a master or source clock (104) for determining precise UTC timing information from received satellite signals and generating time marks based on the timing information. The network switches modify the timing information to account for switch-based delays and forward the modified timing messages to destination clocks (124) in aircraft end systems (108). The end systems relay timing messages back to the source clock via the network switches, the timing information again modified by the network switches according to switch-based delays, and based on the precise timing information exchanged destination clocks in end systems throughout the switched network can precisely synchronize to the source clock. |
