An apparatus (1) for determining a bearing to a radio beacon (2) comprises an arrangement of radio antennas (3) comprising a non-directional antenna system (Σ) and one or more directional antenna systems. The non-directional antenna system (Σ) has a receiving pattern that is omni-directional in a first plane. Each directional antenna system has a respective receiving pattern that is directional in a respective direction in the first plane. The apparatus (1) receives, at the arrangement of radio antennas (3), a direct-sequence spread-spectrum radio signal, transmitted by a radio beacon (2). It generates, for each antenna system, a respective digital signal from an electrical signal output by the antenna system in response to the received radio signal. For each of the one or more directional antenna systems, it performs a coherent despreading operation by intercorrelating the digital signal from the directional antenna system with at least a portion of the digital signal from the non-directional antenna system to determine a correlation value for the directional antenna system. It processes the one or more determined correlation values to determine a bearing to the radio beacon (2) relative to the arrangement of radio antennas (3).

A system includes at least one camera (114) implemented in an aircraft, the at least one camera (114) configured to capture images external to the aircraft. The system further includes at least one processor (116) implemented in the aircraft, one or more of the at least one processor (116) communicatively coupled to the at least one camera (114), the at least one processor (116) configured to: receive the images from the at least one camera (114); identify visual references in at least one of the images; and output an annunciation instruction configured to cause an annunciation to a pilot that the visual references have been identified by the at least one processor (116).

Techniques for selecting frequencies of operation are described. HF signals may land at the receiver node with power levels dependent upon the transmit frequency. The frequency with the highest power level at the receiver node may be selected when the receiver node is not subject to interfering. The receiver node may be unable to receive a desired signal if an interfering signal has a signal level which is higher than the desired signal. The transmitter node may select a frequency which has a receiver signal level which is higher than the interfering signal for the selected frequency. The receiver node may then receive the transmit signal at the selected frequency even when subject to interfering from the interferer node.

The graphical depiction may be configured to be displayed on a display device (112) of an aircraft. The graphical depiction may include an aircraft ownship symbol. The aircraft ownship symbol may be modified following a receipt of one or more signals related to a location of the aircraft relative to an aircraft movement surface and a comparison to the one or more signals to one or more thresholds. The comparison may be configured to determine whether there is insufficient system integrity in a degree of confidence in the location of the aircraft relative to the airport movement surface.

A method of transmitting a message from a sender (101) to a receiver (102) is provided, wherein the communication between the sender (101) and receiver (102) is performed using a hybrid automatic-repeat-request (HARQ) protocol. Artificial noise is added digitally to a first data packet in order to trigger transmission of a second data packet. Corresponding artificial noise is added digitally to the second data packet such that the receiver device (102) can process the data packets together to remove the introduced artificial noise and extract the desired message. Also disclosed are methods where artificial noise is added to a predetermined set of plural data packets in a similar fashion.

An electronic package includes multiple separate circuit cards. An unbalanced, single circuit card is separated into multiple individual circuit cards with balanced stacks. The beamforming circuitry and antenna may be embodied in separate circuit cards. The beamforming circuitry and amplifiers may include pads for electronic connectivity on both a top surface and a bottom surface. Internal vias create electronic connectivity between the top surface and bottom surface. An antenna card may connect to the beamforming circuitry via pads on the top surface of the circuitry card.
