Apparatus for laser processing a material (29), which apparatus comprises at least one first laser (15), at least one second laser (16), an optical combiner (3), and a multicore fibre (10), wherein: each first laser (15) is connected to the optical combiner (3) via a first feed fibre (1); each second laser (16) is connected to the optical combiner (3) via a second feed fibre (2); the optical combiner (3) connects the first feed fibre (1) to a first core (11) of the multicore fibre (10), and the second feed fibre (2) to a second core (12) of the multicore fibre (10); the optical combiner (3) provides a first optical path (41) from the first laser (15) to the first core (11) of the multicore fibre (10); the optical combiner (3) provides a second optical path (42) from the second laser (16) to the second core (12) of the multicore fibre (10); and the optical combiner (3) comprises a fibre bundle (4) that is tapered along its length.

A MBR system for removing PFAS from a flow of wastewater and/or landfill leachate includes an MBR which receives the flow of wastewater and/or landfill leachate having PFAS therein. An impregnation subsystem receives a flow of mixed liquor from the MBR and a predetermined amount PAC to maintain a predetermined ratio of PAC to biomass in the MBR and blends the biomass with the PAC to form PAC-impregnated biological flocs. An outlet coupled to impregnation subsystem outputs a flow of PAC-impregnated biological flocs to the MBR such that the PAC-impregnated biological flocs in the MBR adsorb to and remove a majority of the PFAS from the flow of wastewater and/or landfill leachate and the MBR outputs a flow of treated wastewater and/or landfill leachate having a majority of the PFAS removed.

A powered handle for a surgical stapler can have a drive system including an electric motor. The powered handle can include a manual articulation mechanism to articulate a jaw assembly coupled to a reload shaft connected to the handle. The manual articulation mechanism can include a ball screw mechanism that translates an articulation member responsive to rotation of an articulation knob when an instrument shaft is engaged with the handle. The articulation mechanism includes a release function that allows the jaw assembly to return to a longitudinally centered orientation. The powered handle includes a battery pack serving as a power supply for the drive system. A control system can control actuation of the motor based on user inputs and operating parameters of the stapler and can provide certain motor drive profiles for predetermined positions of the stapler. The powered handle can include a manual return mechanism.

A simulated dissectible tissue model for practicing surgical skills is provided. The simulated tissue comprises a simulated anatomical structure, such as one or more artificial vessel, embedded with a silicone gel layer between two silicone layers. The simulated dissectible tissue, with or without a simulated anatomical structure, is connected to one or more artificial organ via a fiberfill layer. The fiberfill layer includes a plurality of entangled fibers embedded between two adjacent silicone layers. The fiberfill layer creates a dissection plane that permits the one or more artificial organ to be removed by spreading apart and selectively dissecting the chains of entangled fibers. Artificial nerves may be included in fiberfill layer.

A planetary gear comprising a sun gear, a plurality of planet gears, a carrier, and a ring gear, wherein: each planet gear has a longitudinal axis parallel to the central axis of the sun gear and comprises a first gear portion, a second gear portion, and an intermediate portion between the first and second gear portions along the longitudinal axis, each of said portions being centred on the longitudinal axis, and wherein each planet gear is a rigid body such that none of said portions of the planet gear is rotatable relative to any other of said portions of the planet gear; the first gear portion of each planet gear engages with the sun gear; the second gear portion of each planet gear engages with the ring gear and not with the sun gear; and the carrier is arranged parallel to the sun gear and between the intermediate portions of each planet gear, the intermediate portion of each planet gear being located by the carrier so as to allow rotation of the planet gear about its longitudinal axis.

A surgical stapler is provided that includes a spring loaded lift that automatically adjusts a staple cartridge and/or staple formation between a range of sizes. The lift is automatically released as the staple firing mechanism begins its forward translation of the firing sequence. The automatic one-way adjustment also adjusts the staple cartridge while maintaining the cartridge parallel to the anvil to provide consistent staple formations.
