The invention provides a solution for enabling the conversion of account-based assets to token-based assets and the other way around to digital payment systems. This is enabled by defining a conversion protocol that is able to construct conversion instructions to the payment system regardless of its architecture and corresponding conversion system, which is designed to be implemented in the form of smart contracts residing with the settlement system of that digital payment system architecture. The invention provides a set of techniques that can be used to convert digital account-type assets to token-based assets and token-type assets to account-based assets, defining specific algorithms for each.
