A solid phase extraction apparatus (1) comprising a base plate (11), a manifold plate (79) oriented parallel and positioned vertical above the base plate thereby defining an elevator shaft (43), the manifold plate being configured to provide positive pressure to a labware component (3) when the labware component contacts the manifold plate. A lift device (23) positioned in the elevator shaft below the manifold plate with a holder (75) for receiving and holding the labware component; the lift device is configured for reciprocally moving the labware component vertically between the base plate and the manifold plate. The apparatus further comprises a drop protection device (64) for selectively shielding the bottom surface of the labware component and thereby shielding the top surface of another labware component positioned below the labware component. |

A proximal connector (8) is located at a proximal section (9) of the sleeve (2) configured for connecting to a pipettor (11) and a distal connector (12) is located at a distal section (10) of the sleeve (2) configured for connecting to a pipetting tip (13). The distal connector (12) comprises two distinct connecting features (14,15), each for connecting to two different and distinct corresponding connecting features (16,17) on two different pipetting tips (13, 13a). |

Zusammenfassung
A method for coating a surface of a sample with a liquid using a pipettor in a laboratory automation apparatus, the sample having an elongated shape defining a longitudinal sample axis. The laboratory automation apparatus includes a work surface, a pipettor and a robotic arm. The pipettor includes a pipetting tip defining a longitudinal tip axis. The method includes the following steps: i) providing the sample on the work surface, ii) providing a hanging drop on the distal opening of the pipetting tip, iii) using the robotic arm for moving the pipetting tip to the location of the sample on the work surface and aligning the center of the hanging drop with the distal end of the sample. The sample is coated by moving the pipettor with the longitudinal tip axis perpendicular to the longitudinal sample axis such that the distal end of the sample contacts the hanging drop. |

Zusammenfassung
Method for detecting pipetting tips in a laboratory automation apparatus including an electrode and reference electrode providing a capacitive sensor. A pipette tray holding pipetting tips is located on a working table between the electrode and the reference electrode. The pipette tray includes passages organized in a matrix. The pipetting tips have a proximal collar coupled to a pipetting tube and the tubes are received in the passages with the top surface of each collar vertically distanced from the top surface of the tray. The electrical conductivity of the tray differs from the electrical conductivity of the pipetting tips. The method includes scanning the tray by relative movement between the tray and the electrode while an input signal is directed to the capacitance sensor and receiving a feedback signal from the sensor to detect a change in capacitance related to the presence or non-presence of pipetting tips in the tray. |

Zusammenfassung
A laboratory automation apparatus with a liquid volume measurement functionality comprising a working table, a pipettor comprising a pipetting head with an electrode providing a capacitive sensor with a reference electrode. A robotic arm is configured to move the pipetting head above the working table. A processor is operatively coupled to the robotic arm, to the pipettor and to the electrode by an electronic circuit. A capillary is located on the working table having an opening for receiving a target amount of liquid from the pipettor to form an air-liquid meniscus in the capillary. The robotic arm is configured to hover the electrode over the capillary to detect a change in capacitance related to the position of the meniscus, and the processor is configured to calculate the transferred amount of liquid from the position of the meniscus in the capillary. |
