Systems and methods are provided for determining and controlling the location of an interface between separated blood components within a centrifuge. An optical monitoring assembly is used to determine the position of the interface, with the current position being compared to a target position. An error signal, which is indicative of the distance between the two positions, is input into a proportional-integral-derivative control algorithm to generate a control signal. The control signal is used to modify the rate at which a separated blood component is removed from the centrifuge so as to move the interface toward the target position. Blood characteristics, blood source characteristics, and/or the rate at which blood is pumped into the centrifuge are monitored for any changes, with a change in one or more of these factors being used to modify the control algorithm.

A sterile connection device includes first and second carriages, each defining a portion of a first dock and a portion of a second dock. A first blade is associated with the first dock, while a second blade is associated with the second dock. When a pair of tubes is received in only the first dock, the tubes are cut using the first blade, then joined, and then a single replacement blade is moved into association with the second dock, which moves the second blade into association with the first dock and removes the first blade from association with the first dock. When a pair of tubes is received in each dock, the tubes are cut using the first and second blades, then joined, and then two replacement blades are moved into association with the docks, which moves the first and second blades out of association with the docks.

More particularly, blood processing systems and devices including a controller configured to monitor a blood processing procedure and to provide one or more notifications based on a monitored event during the blood processing procedure.

Systems and methods are provided for monitoring and dynamically adjusting the operation of a pneumatic pump. The pump is controlled to alternately apply an initial negative pressure and an initial positive pressure to a flexible diaphragm of a pump chamber to draw fluid into the chamber and then convey the fluid from the chamber. The initial pressures are selected to be the minimum negative pressure at which the chamber is expected to completely fill during application of negative pressure to the diaphragm for an inflow duration and the minimum positive pressure at which the chamber is expected to completely empty during application of positive pressure to the diaphragm for an outflow duration. If a complete fill and/or a complete empty is not achieved, then the appropriate initial pressure is increased in order to arrive at the minimum pressures at which a complete fill and empty are actually achieved.

Systems and method for separating, collecting, treating target cells and infusing the treated target cells to a patient are disclosed. The closed system includes a predefined fluid pathway providing flow communication between a whole blood source and said patient.

A fluid separation device includes a centrifugal separator configured to receive a centrifugal separation chamber of a disposable fluid flow circuit, a pump system configured to convey a fluid into the centrifugal separation chamber and to remove a separated fluid component from the centrifugal separation chamber via an outlet, a color-based interface monitoring system configured to determine an interface position between separated fluid components continuously flowing through the centrifugal separation chamber based on dominant wavelength measurements of layers of separated fluid components during a centrifugal separation procedure, and a controller configured to measure the dominant wavelengths of the layers, calculate a duration as a color time for each measured dominant wavelength, set target color times, calculate error signals and calculate control signals to adjust the pump system to control the flow rate and interface position.

A method for controlling the flow rate of a pneumatic syringe in a system that includes a disposable fluid circuit and reusable hardware configured to accept the disposable fluid circuit. The disposable fluid circuit includes one or more syringes, while the reusable hardware includes a syringe pump for each syringe of the disposable fluid circuit and a controller. The syringe pump includes a vacuum/pressure source for moving the piston within the syringe and a position detector for indicating the position of the piston within the syringe. The method controls several distinct phases of the process: break pressure targeting, glide control and vent control, and the method is the same regardless of whether a positive pressure or a vacuum is applied to the piston of the syringe. Preferably, a proportional-integral-derivative ("PID") feedback loop is used for controlling the movement of the piston in the syringe.

Blood in a separation chamber is separated into a red blood cell layer, a plasma constituent, and a mononuclear cell-containing layer. A portion of the plasma constituent exits the chamber via a plasma outlet, while a first portion of the red blood cell layer exits via a red blood cell outlet. A second portion of the red blood cell layer exits the chamber via the red blood cell outlet and is collected. At least a portion of the collected red blood cell layer may then be conveyed to the chamber via the red blood cell outlet to convey at least a portion of the mononuclear cell-containing layer out of the chamber via the plasma outlet for collection. A second portion of the plasma constituent may be conveyed out of the chamber via the plasma outlet to more fully collect the mononuclear cell-containing layer without the use of collected plasma.

A fluid processing device includes a controller, a centrifuge, and a pump system. The controller controls the pump system to convey a fluid into a centrifuge chamber received by the centrifuge at first and second rates, with the controller also controlling the centrifuge to rotate the chamber at a first rotation rate when the fluid is being conveyed into the chamber at the first rate and controlling the centrifuge to rotate the chamber at a second rotation rate when the fluid is being conveyed into the chamber at the second rate. The first and second rotation rates are different, with each being based at least in part on a concentration of a fluid component within the fluid, the rate at which the pump system is conveying the fluid into the centrifuge chamber, and a target concentration of the fluid component in one of the first and second constituents.
