A method for transmitting binary data using a M-ASK constellation divided into M/2 sets of two symbols is disclosed. Each set of index i comprises the ith and ith +M/2 symbols of the constellation and is associated with a probability pi of transmitting the first symbol of the set. First, m-1 bits are obtained (S300) from an equiprobable binary source where m = log<2>M . A binary source is then selected (S302) in a plurality of binary sources responsive to said m-1 bits, each binary source of index i being associated with a probability of outputting a bit zero equal to p<i>. A symbol of the M-ASK constellation is obtained (S306) that is associated with the binary word formed by the m-1 bits as less significant bits and a bit obtained from the selected source as most significant bit. The symbol is finally transmitted (S308) to a receiver over a communication channel. |

A method for estimating a performance of a wireless communication network for a given time-frequency resource allocation is disclosed. The communications in said wireless communication network are subject to interferences whose activation is modeled by a binary random variable b<sub>t</sub> indicating whether an interferer is active or not at a time instant t, the discrete-time stochastic process {b<sub>t</sub>}t∈[-∞;+∞] being modelled by a Markov chain with memory M. A frequency channel sequence associated with at least one set of consecutive observations of interference activation is determined (S304) from a frequency hopping sequence. The Markov chain associated with the determined frequency channel sequence is then identified (S306) and a set of probabilities of the identified Markov chain is updated (S308) according to the obtained at least one set of consecutive observations of interference activation. |

The invention relates to a method for optimizing a capacity of a communication channel in a communication system comprising at least a transmitter (10), a receiver (11), and the communication channel (12) between the transmitter and the receiver. The transmitter (10) uses a finite set of symbols Ω = {ω<sub>1</sub>, ..., ω<sub>N</sub>} having respective positions on a constellation, to transmit a message including at least one symbol on said communication channel (11). The communication channel (11) is characterized by a conditional probability distribution p<sub>Y</sub>|<sub>X</sub>(ylx), where y is the symbol received at the receiver (12) while x is the symbol transmitted by the transmitter. More particularly, the conditional probability distribution p<sub>Y</sub>|<sub>X</sub>(y|x) is obtained, for each possible transmitted symbol x, by a mixture model using probability distributions represented by exponential functions. An optimized input distribution p<sub>x</sub>(x) is computed, based on parameters of the mixture model, to define optimized symbols positions and probabilities to be used at the transmitter for optimizing the capacity of the channel. |
