Methods are provided for separating radioisotopes from spent ion exchange resins used to process nuclear waste. In some embodiments, the resin is contacted with an aqueous solution including one or more acids to elute the radioisotopes into an enriched solution. In some embodiments, the resin is contacted with an aqueous solution including one or more salts, such as a sulfate or nitrate salt solution, to elute the radioisotopes into an enriched salt solution. The enriched solution can include at least 80%, or at least 95%, of the activity of radioisotopes such as Sr-90, Co-60, Ni-63, Cs-137, C-14, Co-58, and/or Mn-54 originally present in the resin. In some embodiments, a mixed bed resin is separated into cation and anion components, and the anion resin is treated to release C-14 as carbon dioxide gas which is captured and purified to obtain a C-14 product.

Apparatus and methods are described including a ventricular assist device (20). An impeller (50) is placed inside a left ventricle of a subject, the impeller defining a lumen (62) therethrough. A frame (34) is disposed around the impeller, with a proximal bearing (116) disposed at a proximal end of the frame and a distal bearing (118) disposed at a distal end of the frame. An axial shaft (92) passes through the proximal bearing (116), the lumen (62) defined by the impeller, and the distal bearing (118). A motion-cushioning spring (68) is disposed around the axial shaft (92) between a distal end of the impeller (50) and the distal bearing (118), the motion-cushioning spring (68) being configured to cushion axial motion that the impeller (50) undergoes. Infusion tubing (20) has an upstream segment (26) upstream of a pump (24) and a downstream segment (28) downstream of the pump. A side-tube (22) filled with air (36) has a proximal end (30) in fluid communication with the downstream segment and a sealed distal end (32). When pressure in the downstream segment increases, therapeutic substance (21) enters the side-tube, thereby compressing the air and reducing the pressure within the downstream segment. When the pressure in the downstream segment decreases, the compressed air pushes the therapeutic substance back into the downstream segment. An inner diameter (D1) of the side-tube is sufficiently small such that in the absence of positive pressure within the downstream segment, surface tension at the proximal end of the side-tube prevents the therapeutic substance from flowing into the side-tube regardless of the orientation of the side-tube with respect to gravity. An apparatus, comprising: a blood pump (20), comprising: a frame (34) comprising a proximal portion (36), a central portion (38), and a distal portion (40); an inner lining (39) that lines at least part of the central portion (38) of the frame (34); an impeller (50), which is configured to pump blood of a subject proximally, disposed within the frame (34); a pump-outlet tube (24), which is fixed over the proximal portion (36) of the frame (34) and at least part of the central portion (38) of the frame (34), and which is heat welded to the inner lining (39); and an inlet guard (145), which: is distal to the impeller (50), comprises a main body shaped to define one or more blood-inlet openings (108) configured to allow passage of the blood therethrough, comprises multiple proximal flaps (146) extending proximally from the main body and disposed between the pump-outlet tube (24) and the inner lining (39) where the pump-outlet tube (24) and the inner lining (39) are heat welded to one another, and is made of a material having a glass-transition temperature that is higher than respective glass-transition temperatures of each of the inner lining (39) and the pump-outlet tube (24).

An apparatus (100) for testing respiratory protective equipment (200) for leaks to the outside of the same comprises a cabin (110), generators (140, 150) for supplying NaCl aerosol and air to the cabin (110), a measuring equipment (160) for determining leaks in the respiratory protective equipment (200) to the outside of the same based on a concentration of NaCl aerosol flowing out of the cabin (110) with respect to a reference concentration of NaCl aerosol, and an air extractor (170) for extracting air from the cabin (120) to the measuring equipment (160). The cabin (110) has access area (130) for placing a Sheffield torso (220) in the cabin interior (120) on which the respiratory protective equipment (200) to be tested is fitted.

Apparatus and methods are described including a device (50) configured for insertion into a left ventricle of a heart of a subject. A delivery tube (142) is coupled to the device and configured to traverse an aortic arch of the subject while the device is within the left ventricle. An elongation-resistant fiber (292) runs axially along the delivery tube so as to bias an orientation of the delivery tube while the delivery tube traverses the aortic arch such that the elongation-resistant fiber (292) is disposed inside a curve of the aortic arch, thereby biasing an orientation of the device.
